About

Also known as: Cologne Concerto

Concerto Köln has been one of Europe's most distinctive period instrument ensembles since forming in Cologne in 1985, built largely from recent conservatory graduates who wanted to do things their own way. No government subsidies, no permanent conductor, just a collective approach that has kept them artistically sharp across more than five decades. Their repertoire runs the full stretch from early Baroque through to Wagner, which is a wider range than most historically informed ensembles attempt. Over 50 recordings tell the story well. Their 2004 Mozart Le nozze di Figaro picked up a Grammy as well as the Gramophone Record of the Year, and they have worked with conductors and soloists including René Jacobs, Philippe Jaroussky, and Daniel Harding. One of the more unexpected corners of their catalogue is a collaboration with Ensemble Sarband that pairs Turkish folk music with Mozart and others writing in a Turkish style, the kind of curious, well executed detour that sets them apart.
