About

Mahan Esfahani is the harpsichordist who proved the instrument could hold its own anywhere, from the BBC Proms to Carnegie Hall to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. He was the first harpsichordist ever named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, and his 2014 recording of C.P.E. Bach's Württemberg Sonatas for Hyperion won a Gramophone Award in the Baroque Instrumental category, which is no small thing for an instrument that plenty of concert programmers still treat as a curiosity. His discography leans heavily into Bach, with complete sets of the Goldberg Variations, the Toccatas, the French Suites, the Partitas, and more, all released on Hyperion and Deutsche Grammophon. He is also a professor of harpsichord at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a regular voice on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, hosting programmes like Record Review and Building a Library. He has also been working on radio documentaries, including one on the history of African American composers in classical music.
