Cory Branan has built a reputation as one of those singer songwriters who defies easy categorization, which is exactly why he titled his 2012 Bloodshot Records album Mutt. That word was his most common answer whenever anyone asked him to describe his music, and it fits: his sound pulls from country, folk, rock and plenty of other directions, tied together by what American Songwriter called a "hushed, dry whiskey voice" and lyrics that lean impressionistic and story driven. His 2014 follow up, The No Hit Wonder, landed on Rolling Stone's list of the top 40 country records of that year and featured a remarkable cast including Jason Isbell, Craig Finn, Caitlin Rose and Tim Easton. His fifth album, Adios, pushed things further still, with Pitchfork calling it possibly his best work to date and praising its musical imagination. Branan first got wider attention back in 2003 when he performed "Miss Ferguson" on The David Letterman Show, promoting his debut full length The Hell You Say.
