Sequencer, their 1996 record, is the album Covenant fans tend to point to first. Some listeners called it the best electro album of the decade, and it still turns up in club sets today. The Swedish duo of Eskil Simonsson and Joakim Montelius built that record around tight sequencing, varied melodies, and lyrics that actually had something to say, a clear step up from their 1994 debut Dreams of a Cryotank. Over time, Covenant steadily pulled their sound toward synth pop territory. Europa in 1998 kicked off that shift, and United States of Mind pushed it further. Their 2000 standalone single Der Leiermann, a reworking of a Franz Schubert art song, showed just how far they were willing to roam from their EBM roots. The band has kept busy in recent years, with demo and remix versions of tracks like For Our Time and The Men surfacing as reminders that Simonsson and Montelius are far from done.
