Few debut albums have made as big a splash as Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual, which became the first debut record by a female artist to score four top five hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' and 'Time After Time'. Her voice is a genuine force too, a four octave range that critics noticed even in her early club days. She has sold over 50 million records worldwide and picked up a haul of accolades along the way: two Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy, a Tony, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making her one of the rare performers to hold three of the four major American entertainment awards. Lauper is far more than a pop nostalgia act. Her 2010 album Memphis Blues topped the Billboard Blues Albums chart for 13 consecutive weeks, and in 2013 she became the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Original Score on her own, for the Broadway musical Kinky Boots. That show went on to win Best Musical and later picked up the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in the West End. She has also been a long standing advocate for LGBTQ rights, weaving her humanitarian commitments just as tightly into her public identity as her signature wild hair and eccentric style.
