About

One of Europe's great orchestras, the Czech Philharmonic has been playing since 1896, when Antonín Dvořák himself stepped up to conduct its first concert. Based at the Rudolfinum in Prague, it has racked up a remarkable history, including hosting the world premiere of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 in 1908. The orchestra built its international reputation under conductor Václav Talich and went on to work with a long line of distinguished chief conductors, from Rafael Kubelík to Vladimir Ashkenazy. Semyon Bychkov has led the ensemble since the 2018 to 2019 season, with his contract running through 2028. Recordings have long been central to the orchestra's identity, whether on the historic Supraphon label or more recently on Pentatone, whose March 2024 release of Má vlast earned the ensemble the BBC Music Magazine Orchestral Award in 2025 and the Gramophone Orchestra of the Year title the same year.
