Paavo Järvi learned conducting from his father and has built a reputation for performances that critics describe as powerful and expressive, with a particular liveliness in his interpretations. The Estonian conductor has been principal conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich since 2019, a partnership that has produced a notably ambitious Mahler symphony cycle, with the orchestra recording all of the symphonies and performing them live as well. Mahler sits at the heart of what Järvi and the Zürich orchestra have been doing together. The Sixth Symphony, sometimes called the Tragic, is a good example of the kind of large scale, emotionally charged repertoire that suits his direct and energetic approach on the podium.
