About
Dalia Stasevska made history more than once before most conductors land a major post. The Ukrainian born Finnish conductor became the first woman ever named principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, a role she stepped into in July 2019 and has since extended through 2027. She also conducted the Last Night of the Proms in 2020, one of the most watched classical music events in the world, doing so in an empty hall under pandemic conditions. Her appointment as chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, another first for a woman in that role, followed in 2021. Before all of that, she spent years as an assistant to Paavo Järvi at the Orchestre de Paris and conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic at the 2018 Nobel Prize Ceremony. The Royal Philharmonic Society gave her its 2020 Conductor Award, which sums up the momentum she had built in a remarkably short time.
