Few producers have shaped modern rock the way Daniel Lanois has. The Canadian from Hull, Quebec built his reputation working with Brian Eno to craft the atmospheric sound that defined U2's The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, and went on to helm records for Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson. Three of the albums he produced won the Grammy for Album of the Year, including Dylan's Time Out of Mind. Rolling Stone tagged him as the most important record producer to emerge in the Eighties, and it's hard to argue. Lanois is more than a behind the boards guy though. His solo output, starting with Acadie in 1989, showcases his own guitar and pedal steel playing, and his songs have been covered by everyone from Jerry Garcia Band to Dave Matthews. He wrote and performed the music for Sling Blade and contributed vocal tracks to Red Dead Redemption 2. His signature sound, big live drums, atmospheric guitars and ambient reverb, is unmistakable whether he's producing someone else or stepping into the spotlight himself.
