DAOKO built her following the old school internet way, uploading music to Nico Nico Douga as a teenager and letting the clips spread on their own. The Tokyo rapper and singer blends j pop melodies with electropop production and pop rap, and her voice became widely known outside that niche when she featured on TeddyLoid's viral music video "ME!ME!ME!" in 2014. Her 2017 collab with Kenshi Yonezu on "Uchiage Hanabi" for the anime film Fireworks brought her to an even bigger audience, and later that year she performed at Anime Weekend Atlanta. She appeared at NHK Kohaku in 2018, one of Japan's most watched music events. Beyond music, DAOKO has published photo books and zines under her own name. Her recent output keeps the visual side strong too, with music videos for tracks like "Tsuki no Hana", the theme for the Sailor Moon Cosmos film, and "Allure of the Dark" in 2023.
