About
Also known as: Deervana
Deer Tick are a Providence, Rhode Island band who traffic in a gritty blend of folk, rock, blues, and country, though they'll be the first to push back on that last label. "We're proud not to sing with a twang" is the band's own line, and their records back it up. Fronted by singer songwriter John McCauley alongside guitarist Ian O'Neil, bassist Christopher Ryan, and drummer Dennis Ryan, the group has built a reputation for loose, honest records that feel lived in rather than polished. Their third album The Black Dirt Sessions marked a turning point, with even the band admitting it gelled better than anything before it. Live, Deer Tick are known for pulling out covers from artists as varied as The Replacements, Hank Williams, the Beastie Boys, and Warren Zevon. They've also performed full sets as Deervana, their Nirvana tribute alter ego, including a show marking the 20th anniversary of In Utero. Their deal with Partisan Records helped them grow from a regional touring act into a band with real international reach.
