About
Der Weg einer Freiheit write black metal in German, but skip the Satanist imagery the genre is known for. Their lyrics stick to despair, memory and the darker corners of human society, set against a sound rooted in the Scandinavian school of black metal. Frontman Nikita Kamprad has name checked bands like Emperor, Dissection and 1349 as reference points, while aiming for something more progressive than his earlier band Frostgrim. The band started in Würzburg in 2009, and Kamprad took over vocals in 2012 after co founder Tobias Jaschinsky left. Since then they have put out Stellar, Finisterre, Noktvrn and Innern through Season of Mist, and Finisterre reached No. 82 on the German albums chart. They have shared stages with Wolves in the Throne Room, The Ocean and Heaven Shall Burn, and played big festivals like Hellfest, Summer Breeze and Wacken. Their full Hellfest 2023 set is up on YouTube if you want a taste of the live show.
