Formed in Manhattan Beach in 1977, the Descendents started out playing coffee fuelled surf punk before pivoting hard into melodic hardcore once vocalist Milo Aukerman joined. That combination of breakneck speed and genuine melody became their signature, and their 1982 debut Milo Goes to College is still considered a cornerstone of the genre. The album's title was literal: Aukerman left to study biology, eventually earning a PhD in biochemistry, which only added to the band's lovable nerd mythology. Since 1986 the lineup has been locked in as Aukerman, drummer Bill Stevenson, guitarist Stephen Egerton, and bassist Karl Alvarez, a combination that has powered eight studio albums across a career full of hiatuses and reunions. Stevenson also played a stint in Black Flag, and the band's orbit produced the spinoff act All. The Descendents remain one of the most influential acts in pop punk and melodic hardcore, with a sound that has clearly left its fingerprints all over the last four decades of punk.
