About

Diary of Dreams is essentially a one man operation: German darkwave act built around Adrian Hates, who writes, produces, and records almost everything himself, only pulling in a full band when he hits the stage. The project takes its name from an early classical guitar composition of his, which tells you something about the level of craft involved. Since the debut Cholymelan in 1994, Hates has run his own label, Accession Records, and built a devoted following through a string of albums that move between dense electronic rhythms and sparse, atmospheric gloom. The 2004 concept album Nigredo, inspired by a mythology the band invented themselves, is a fan favourite and showed off their range nicely, blending club ready beats with darker, more restrained moments. Hates has spoken about being influenced by German expressionism from the early twentieth century and what he calls the beauty of ugliness, which comes through in both the lyrics and the visual side of the project. Hell in Eden, released in 2017, is among their more recent output, with the band continuing to release new work well into the 2020s.
