About
Also known as: Digable Planet
Digable Planets built their reputation on a sound that felt genuinely new: jazz samples, cool tempos, and politically aware lyrics wrapped in a laid back aesthetic that set them apart from most hip hop of the early 1990s. Their 1993 debut Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) went gold and produced "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)", a crossover hit that won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Then they zigged hard: the follow up, Blowout Comb, was darker, denser, and soaked in Black Panther imagery, earning comparisons to a "damn near revolutionary" statement. The trio, Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Mariana "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, split in 1995 but have circled back together several times since. A reunion tour in 2016 led to the live album Digable Planets Live, recorded in Pennsylvania just outside Philadelphia where it all started. Between reunions, the members have stayed busy: Butler with Shabazz Palaces, Irving with the Cosmic Funk Orchestra, and Vieira collaborating on projects ranging from a Billie Holiday remix album to Brazilian hip hop fusion group BROOKZILL!.
