The Roots have been redefining what a hip hop group can be since forming in Philadelphia in 1987, built around the chemistry between rapper Black Thought and drummer Questlove. What sets them apart is the commitment to live instrumentation, a sprawling sound that pulls in jazz, soul, and rock alongside the rap, earning them the tag "hip hop's first legitimate band." Their early grind included busking on street corners and releasing their debut Organix independently in 1993 after briefly relocating to London to build a following. Things really clicked with their 1999 breakthrough Things Fall Apart, which hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200, went platinum, and picked up a Grammy for Best Rap Performance for the Erykah Badu collaboration "You Got Me." Since 2009 they have held down the house band slot on NBC's Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, a gig that keeps the full ensemble, including guitar, sousaphone, trumpet, saxophone, and multiple keyboards, on national television every weeknight.
