Black Star is the duo of Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli, two rappers whose individual careers were already well regarded before they joined forces. Their 1998 debut, 'Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star', became a landmark in conscious hip hop, weaving sharp political commentary, Afrocentric philosophy and densely layered wordplay over soulful, jazz influenced beats. That combination of lyrical depth and artistic integrity turned the record into a cult classic and a reference point for generations of underground rap artists. After years apart spent on separate solo work, the two reunited to record 'No Fear of Time', produced entirely by Madlib. The project proved their chemistry and their sharp tongued approach to storytelling had lost none of their edge.
