About
Also known as: The Doves
Before they were Doves, Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Jez and Andy Williams were Sub Sub, a dance act whose 1993 single "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" cracked the UK top three. A studio fire in 1996 wiped out everything they had, and rather than call it quits, the three regrouped as an indie rock band from the Cheshire area, arriving at a sound that blended post Britpop atmosphere with dream pop and something closer to space rock. Their debut as Doves, Lost Souls, landed in 2000 and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. Three of their six studio albums hit number one in the UK, including The Last Broadcast and Some Cities, and they racked up a pair of top ten singles with "There Goes the Fear" and "Black and White Town". After a hiatus that started in 2010, they came back in 2018 and put out The Universal Want in 2020. Mental health issues have kept Goodwin off the stage since 2019, but the band has kept going with the Williams brothers holding things together.
