Few British bands captured the raw, sweaty energy of live rock and roll quite like Dr. Feelgood. Formed on Canvey Island, Essex in 1971, they built their reputation on relentless touring and ferocious pub rock shows, with Wilko Johnson's choppy, staccato guitar style at the centre of their distinctively gritty R&B sound. Their 1976 live album Stupidity hit number one in the UK Albums Chart, their only chart topper, and remains the definitive document of what made them special. The Ramones even opened for them during their 1976 New York shows. After Johnson's departure, guitarist Gypie Mayo helped the band score their only top ten single, "Milk and Alcohol", in 1979. Singer Lee Brilleaux kept the band going through constant lineup changes until his death in 1994, after which the band regrouped as he had wished and kept touring. A documentary by Julien Temple, Oil City Confidential, brought their story to a wider audience and was critically praised when it hit cinemas in 2010. The current lineup, fronted by Robert Kane, continues to play shows worldwide.
