Few bands have leaned into the contradictions of the American South the way Drive By Truckers have. Built around the songwriting partnership of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, the Athens, Georgia outfit plays a sprawling, guitar heavy version of southern rock that takes in country, blues, soul, and a healthy dose of punk attitude. Their 2001 double album Southern Rock Opera, which tangled Lynyrd Skynyrd mythology with a fictional band called Betamax Guillotine, earned them a four star Rolling Stone review and a Band of the Year nod from No Depression. The band spent years as a three guitar outfit, a lineup that included Jason Isbell before he went solo, and that setup gave their records a dense, layered feel. Albums like Decoration Day and The Dirty South dug deep into Southern gothic storytelling, with characters navigating murder, revenge, and racial injustice. Hood and Cooley have remained the constants through every lineup shift, and their combined songwriting keeps the band's catalogue one of the most politically sharp and musically restless in American rock.
