Few debut albums land with the force that Rockferry did in 2008. The Welsh singer Duffy built that record with Bernard Butler and a crash course in vintage soul, drawing on Al Green, Bettye Swann and Burt Bacharach, and the results were hard to argue with: the album hit number one in the UK and several other markets, while the lead single Mercy topped the UK Singles Chart and cracked the top ten in twelve countries. The Brit Awards gave her three wins that year, including Best British Female and Best British Album, and a Grammy followed for Best Pop Vocal Album. Her second album, Endlessly, arrived in 2010 alongside a acting debut in the film Patagonia, but met with more modest results. Then Duffy stepped away entirely, and in 2020 she explained publicly that the reason was abduction and rape. She resurfaced briefly for the 2015 film Legend, contributing three songs to its soundtrack, but has not performed since. Her voice, which often drew comparisons to Dusty Springfield, made her one of the more distinctive soul pop figures of her era.
