Earl Sweatshirt hit the rap world hard at 16 with his self titled mixtape, a free download that critics immediately latched onto. Born Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, he had already caught Tyler, the Creator's attention on MySpace and joined the Odd Future collective before most teenagers had figured out what they wanted to do with their lives. His debut studio album Doris landed in the top five of the Billboard 200, and he kept building from there with I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside and the deeply experimental Some Rap Songs, both landing top 20 and winning serious critical respect. His sound sits somewhere in the experimental and abstract end of hip hop, lo fi textures rubbing up against dense lyricism. The collaborative album Voir Dire with The Alchemist in 2023 drew wide praise, and he has continued releasing work through Warner Records including Sick! and the more recent Live Laugh Love. His father, South African political poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, is a recurring presence in his music and a clear influence on the weight he brings to his words.
