About

Also known as: Echo & the Bunnyman, Echo and the Bunnymen

Few bands captured the brooding, atmospheric side of post punk quite like Echo & the Bunnymen. Formed in Liverpool in 1978 around vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant and bassist Les Pattinson, they started out with a drum machine before Pete de Freitas stepped in on drums for their 1980 debut, Crocodiles, which cracked the UK top 20. The records that followed built something genuinely special: Heaven Up Here, Porcupine and Ocean Rain cemented their reputation, with 'The Cutter' hitting the UK top 10 in 1983 and 'The Killing Moon' doing the same the following year. The band went through real turbulence in the late 1980s, losing McCulloch and then de Freitas, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1989. McCulloch and Sergeant eventually regrouped with Pattinson in 1997 and kept releasing records, finding both older fans and new ones willing to follow them. They have headlined the Rockaway Beach Festival twice in recent years, proof that their appeal has not faded.
