Few bands have weaponised scrap metal and jackhammers quite like Einstürzende Neubauten. Formed in West Berlin in 1980, the group built their reputation on custom made instruments hammered together from industrial debris, with Blixa Bargeld's vocals shifting from screamed slogans to something far more poetic as the years went on. Their debut LP Kollaps set the tone: brutal, confrontational, and unlike anything else being made at the time. A 1984 show at the ICA in London was shut down after twenty minutes when the band literally started drilling through the stage. Over time the noise gave way to something more layered and hypnotic. Albums like Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala and Haus der Lüge found massive audiences in the US and Japan, and Tabula Rasa in 1993 marked a clear shift toward electronic textures and softer edges. Bargeld spent two decades moonlighting as guitarist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds before quitting in 2003 to focus solely on Neubauten. The current lineup, anchored by founding members Bargeld and N.U. Unruh, continues to push the project forward.
