Few musicians wear their roots as literally as Eliades Ochoa, the Cuban guitarist and singer who never takes off his cowboy hat and never strayed far from the son tradition that shaped him. Born in Loma de la Avispa near Santiago de Cuba, he became leader of the legendary Cuarteto Patria in 1978, a group founded back in 1939, and insisted on bringing fresh elements to its repertoire rather than simply keeping the flame. Beyond guitar, he plays the tres and a custom variant with two extra strings. His involvement with the Buena Vista Social Club, including the iconic 1999 Wim Wenders documentary, turned him into a global name. He kept pushing boundaries well after that moment, most notably on AfroCubism in 2010, a collaboration with Cuban and Malian musicians including Toumani Diabaté that fused two deep musical traditions. His discography stretches across decades and includes a collaboration with Bob Dylan, and his 2023 album Guajiro shows he has no intention of slowing down.
