About

Ella van Poucke has built a reputation as one of the more compelling Dutch cellists of her generation, performing as a soloist with orchestras like the Netherlands Philharmonic, the Brussels Philharmonic, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Strings, and working alongside conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach and Michael Sanderling. In 2012, she gave the world premiere of a cello concerto written specifically for her by Finnish composer Uljas Pulkkis, and that same year she was named Dutch Musician of the Year. Her debut recording focused on the complete works for cello by Robert Schumann, earning praise from Gramophone for her spontaneity and feel for Romantic sensibility. She co founded the Chamber Music Festival Amsterdam in 2010 with her brother, pianist Nicolas van Poucke, and still serves as its artistic director. Her chamber music partners have included violinists Gidon Kremer, Vilde Frang, and Christian Tetzlaff, and violist Tabea Zimmermann. Since September 2022 she has also lectured at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and she plays on a cello built by Giovanni Paolo Maggini in 1620, on loan from an anonymous sponsor.
