Emily Jane White has built a quietly compelling catalog rooted in the darker, more introspective corners of folk and chamber pop. Based in San Francisco, she has released seven solo albums since her 2007 debut Dark Undercoat, each one pushing further into what she calls "the shadow side of life", exploring subtleties and undercurrents that most artists would rather leave alone. Her literary touchstones say a lot: Cormac McCarthy, Emily Brontë, Edgar Allan Poe. Her albums have tackled environmental collapse, capitalism, patriarchy and racial justice with a poet's eye rather than a slogan. Blood/Lines from 2013 brought a neo gothic feel and a guest appearance from Marissa Nadler, while 2016's They Moved in Shadow All Together wove folk pop with sharp political intent. Her sixth record, Immanent Fire, arrived in 2019 co produced with Anton Patzner. A 2007 track of hers even turned up on the menu screen of the video game As Dusk Falls in 2022, which is a strange and fitting kind of immortality.
