Few composers have left a mark on cinema the way Ennio Morricone did. With over 400 film and television scores, he shaped the sound of entire genres, most famously the Spaghetti Western, through his long collaboration with Sergio Leone on classics like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, the latter selling an estimated 10 million copies worldwide. His trademark blend of unconventional instruments, electric guitar, whistling, choral voices and orchestral sweep gave film music a new vocabulary that artists from Hans Zimmer to Metallica have drawn from ever since. Beyond Westerns, Morricone scored everything from Dario Argento thrillers to Roland Joffé's The Mission, Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2016. He also wrote pop songs, arranged for artists like Paul Anka and Andrea Bocelli, and produced over 100 classical works. Pieces like The Ecstasy of Gold and Gabriel's Oboe have taken on a life entirely their own, far beyond the films that first featured them.
