Étienne Daho sings in a low, whispery voice that draws comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Chet Baker, and that sound has made him one of France's most enduring pop cult figures since his debut in 1981. His influences read like a very particular record collection: Serge Gainsbourg, The Velvet Underground, The Beach Boys, and Syd Barrett. Every album he has released has gone at least gold, from the synth driven early work like Pop satori, produced with a young William Orbit, to the double platinum Paris ailleurs recorded in New York. His collaborations are genuinely impressive in their range. He has worked with Jane Birkin, Marianne Faithfull, Françoise Hardy, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Vanessa Paradis, and Air, among many others. British listeners may know him best through Saint Etienne, whose number 11 hit "He's on the Phone" is built around his 1984 track "Week end à Rome". In 2016, John Cale personally invited him to perform at the 50th anniversary celebration of The Velvet Underground and Nico at the Philharmonie de Paris, which says a lot about where he stands among his peers.
