Everclear built their reputation on three consecutive platinum records for Capitol Records, a run that cemented Art Alexakis as one of the sharpest voices in 1990s alternative rock. Formed in Portland, Oregon in 1992 by Alexakis alongside bassist Craig Montoya and drummer Greg Eklund, the band hit their stride with Sparkle and Fade, So Much for the Afterglow, and Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile. The name itself came from Alexakis's fondness for the idea of something that looks innocent but packs a serious punch, much like the band's mix of big guitars, feedback, and melodic hooks. After Montoya and Eklund departed in the mid 2000s, Alexakis kept the Everclear name alive with new lineups, releasing Welcome to the Drama Club, Invisible Stars, and Black is the New Black. The band has stayed busy on the road, including multiple runs of the Summerland Tour, the 1990s nostalgia festival they helped make a regular fixture.
