Filter has always been Richard Patrick's show, the Cleveland born outfit he started after leaving Nine Inch Nails as their touring guitarist. The debut album Short Bus landed in 1995 and went platinum on the strength of the controversial single "Hey Man Nice Shot", and the band quickly built a reputation for blending industrial and alternative rock with real emotional punch. The follow up Title of Record pushed things in a moodier, more melodic direction, and its ballad "Take a Picture" became the band's biggest hit, reportedly inspired by Patrick stripping to his boxers on a flight. Through years of lineup shuffles, a stint in rehab, side projects and even a shelved album called reBus, Patrick kept Filter alive. The seventh album Crazy Eyes came out in 2016, and the long gestating The Algorithm finally arrived in August 2023.
