Few bands can say their breakthrough came from a song that went viral before they even had a record deal, but that's exactly how Foster the People got their start. The Los Angeles indie pop group built their reputation on the back of "Pumped Up Kicks", which Mark Foster originally wrote at a jingle studio, posted as a free download in 2010, and watched take on a life of its own. It climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned the band three Grammy nominations, all off their debut album Torches. The lineup solidified around Foster and keyboardist Isom Innis, and the band kept evolving across four studio albums. Supermodel leaned into guitar driven alternative rock, Sacred Hearts Club brought in a dancier feel with "Sit Next to Me" going quadruple platinum, and their fourth record Paradise State of Mind arrived in 2024 to mostly positive reviews. The single "Lost in Space", also from 2024, shows the band still very much in motion.
