Dutch trumpeter Gijs Levelt has built a career at the crossroads of improvised music, contemporary jazz, non Western traditions and pop. He has toured extensively worldwide with groups including the Amsterdam Klezmer Band, STriCat and Spinifex, as well as running his own projects. His writing draws heavily on music from the Middle East and the Maghreb, and his compositional touchstones include figures like Rabih Abou Khalil, Anouar Brahem and John Zorn's Masada. The result is something warm and melodic, occasionally rousing, with space carved out for improvisation that feels both inevitable and imaginative.
