About
Giles Corey is the solo project of Dan Barrett, who also co founded Have a Nice Life and the label Enemies List Home Recordings. Where Have a Nice Life leans into post industrial darkness, Giles Corey takes a quieter and more vulnerable route: acoustic instruments, intimate songwriting, and a sound that still manages to build into walls of noise. The self titled debut album from 2011 set a strict rule for itself, only acoustic instruments, yet ended up incorporating piano, haunting choral textures, heavy organs, and field recordings alongside the guitar. Lyrically the project goes deep into depression, death, history, and the paranormal, not from a safe distance but in close and confessional terms. Quiet despair tips into catharsis, and something that starts as a personal reckoning tends to land as a shared one.
