Few bands had a more turbulent rise than Gin Blossoms. The Tempe, Arizona act broke through in 1992 with New Miserable Experience, an album that eventually went quadruple platinum on the back of jangly, hook heavy singles like "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You", both written by founding guitarist Doug Hopkins, who had been removed from the band before its release and died by suicide in December 1993. That shadow hangs over the record, which remains one of the defining alt rock albums of the early nineties. Their follow up, Congratulations I'm Sorry, kept the momentum going with "Follow You Down" and "Til I Hear It from You", and earned a Grammy nomination for "As Long as It Matters". The band split in 1997 but reunited in 2001 and have kept at it since, releasing Major Lodge Victory in 2006, No Chocolate Cake in 2010, and Mixed Reality in 2018. They were also a regular presence on Late Show with David Letterman, where musical director Paul Shaffer reportedly could not get enough of them.
