Girls Aloud pulled off something genuinely rare: a reality TV act that critics actually respected. Formed on ITV's Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, the five piece group of Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh kicked things off with "Sound of the Underground", a Brian Higgins and Xenomania production that spent four weeks at number one and wrong footed everyone expecting disposable pop. Their ongoing partnership with Xenomania kept pushing the sound into electropop and dance rock territory, earning them a reputation for doing something genuinely inventive within mainstream pop. Guinness World Records twice named them the most successful reality TV group in the world. Over their career they racked up twenty top ten singles in the UK, including four number ones, and shifted over four million albums. They disbanded in March 2013 after the Ten: The Hits Tour, and the world got a little dimmer in 2021 when Sarah Harding passed away. The remaining four members reunited for The Girls Aloud Show in 2024, which became the biggest UK arena tour of that year.
