Few bands have built a mythology as elaborate as Gong. Formed in Paris in 1967 by Australian guitarist Daevid Allen and vocalist Gilli Smyth, they fused psychedelic rock, jazz and space rock into something utterly their own, a sound that became the defining voice of the Canterbury scene. Their second album, Camembert Electrique, locked in that signature progressive space rock feel, but it was the Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy, Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and You, released between 1973 and 1974, that cemented their legend. Those three records spin an allegorical tale of Zero the Hero, the Good Witch Yoni and the Pot Head Pixies from the Planet Gong. After Allen passed away in 2015, the remaining members carried on at his own encouragement, releasing Rejoice! I'm Dead! in 2016 and continuing with a loose trilogy of albums including The Universe Also Collapses and Unending Ascending. Over the decades the band has drawn in collaborators including Steve Hillage, Bill Laswell and Theo Travis, proving the Gong universe keeps expanding no matter who steps through the door.
