About
Gotu Jim is the stage name of Amsterdam rapper Jim Lageveen, and the name itself is a clue to his vibe: it means 'Golden Jim' in Sranantongo, taken from a fake gold chain his mother gave him. He broke through in 2018 with 'Tweede Klas Shit', a track that came out of an improvised late night rap session involving a friend's new auto tune gadget. That song set the tone for his style, heavy on autotune, with lyrics circling around smoking, partying and the kind of subjects that have made him a particular favourite in Dutch student association circles. His debut album Tweede Klas came out that same year on the label Burning Fik, making him the first artist to sign with the imprint. He followed it up in 2019 with Generation K, and that year also took his music directly to student associations across the Netherlands, including Vindicat and Minerva. Some of his best known tracks include 'Misschien (Kwijt)', 'Afterparty' and 'Stiekem wil ik DJ zijn'.
