Great Lake Swimmers built their reputation on hushed, atmospheric folk that draws comparisons to Nick Drake, Iron and Wine, and Neil Young, with frontman Tony Dekker citing Gordon Lightfoot, Gram Parsons, and Hank Williams as personal touchstones. The Toronto based Canadian band started out on the independent label weewerk before signing to Nettwerk in 2007, and their fourth album Lost Channels landed a Polaris Music Prize shortlisting and a Juno nomination in the Roots and Traditional category. That kind of critical recognition is well earned: their sound sits somewhere between chamber folk and slowcore, delicate acoustic arrangements paired with Dekker's understated vocals. Over the years the band has kept busy beyond studio records, composing an instrumental soundtrack for a photography e book of the Thousand Islands region and contributing to Abigail Lapell's 2024 album Anniversary. Their ninth album Caught Light arrived in October 2025, showing no signs of slowing down. Dekker has also stepped out solo, releasing covers and originals that dig deeper into his country and folk roots.
