About

Gregory Alan Isakov grew up between worlds, born in Johannesburg and eventually settling in Boulder, Colorado, where he also runs a six acre working farm. That grounded, quietly independent spirit runs all through his music: indie folk and country folk that leans on guitar and banjo, exploring nature, introspection, and personal experience without ever feeling precious about it. Songs like "The Stable Song", "Big Black Car", and "San Luis" have built him a devoted following, and his 2009 album This Empty Northern Hemisphere, which featured Brandi Carlile on five tracks and a cover of Leonard Cohen, remains a fan touchstone. Isakov records out of a studio on his own farm in Boulder County, which seems about right for someone whose influences include Cohen, Gillian Welch, and Iron and Wine. In 2016 he released a full orchestral album with the Colorado Symphony, and Evening Machines earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2019. His most recent record, Appaloosa Bones, came out in 2023.
