About

Groundation is a California roots reggae band that started life in the jazz program at Sonoma State University, and you can still hear it. Harrison Stafford founded the group in 1998 and has led it through plenty of lineup changes since, steering a sound built on swirling jazz and funk horns, Latin and African polyrhythms and soulful harmony vocals. They record on analog gear, with Stafford insisting they stick to the 1970s way of doing things, and their live shows lean on classic jazz style improvisation. Hebron Gate, recorded with engineer Jim Fox, put them on the international map, and Fox has worked on every album since. The Next Generation opened with a full jazz big band of 12 horn players and was voted Best Roots Reggae Album of 2018 by Reggae.fr, edging out Ziggy Marley. On One Rock they teamed up with veteran vocal groups Israel Vibration, The Abyssinians and The Congos. They have played in over 35 countries, and major festivals like Summerjam are regular stops.
