About
Guerilla Toss started out as an instrumental duo mashing free jazz with punk, then turned into something far weirder and more danceable once singer Kassie Carlson joined. Over the years they've folded in disco, funk and a zany new wave streak, and put out records on a spread of underground labels, including John Zorn's Tzadik and DFA Records, the label co founded by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. Rolling Stone once named them one of the "10 Great Modern Punk Bands", and Henry Rollins called them one of the first great bands of the new century. Live, they borrow from the Grateful Dead playbook, switching up setlists, jamming, and welcoming tapers to their shows. Albums like Eraser Stargazer, GT ULTRA and Twisted Crystal built their reputation, and in 2022 they signed to Sub Pop and released Famously Alive. Stephen Malkmus liked what he heard enough to bring them along as openers on Pavement's reunion run.
