About

Also known as: Hans de Booy

Hans de Booij is a Dutch singer and songwriter from Arnhem whose biggest moment came in 1983 when the single Annabel, a reworked version of a Boudewijn de Groot and Herman Pieter de Boer song, climbed to number three in the Dutch Top 40. His self titled debut album was a success in both the Netherlands and Belgium, but de Booij always felt more at home in the territory of grim chansons in the vein of Jacques Brel and Ramses Shaffy than in the pop direction his early career took. That tension shaped everything that followed. Through the years he kept performing in theaters and Antwerp cafés, went bankrupt, sold a self written book door to door until he had shifted over 4,000 copies, and eventually moved to the Thai island of Ko Pha Ngan. He kept releasing music, including a collaboration with Dutch rapper Sef and later work with De kleinkunstROCKband. A new album, Hoe had ik het anders moeten doen, appeared in late 2020, and a biographical portrait by Sander van Leeuwen was published in 2023.
