Few German artists have left a mark quite like Herbert Grönemeyer. His 1984 album 4630 Bochum broke him through as a musician after years of mixed results, and it remains one of the best selling records in German history. Then came Mensch in 2002, which shifted pre release orders straight to platinum and sent him on a two year tour seen by one and a half million people. Those two records alone make him the most successful artist in Germany, with combined album sales topping 13 million. Beyond the chart numbers, Grönemeyer is a genuinely versatile figure. Many fans know him from Wolfgang Petersen's classic war film Das Boot, where he played Lieutenant Werner. He also founded his own label, Grönland Records, and has written film scores, performed at the Royal Albert Hall, and collaborated with Bono, Anohni Hegarty and James Dean Bradfield on his English language album I Walk. His rock leans emotional and direct, sung almost entirely in German, which makes his reach across German speaking countries all the more impressive.
