About
Het Gurdjieff Kwartet builds its music around the life and travels of G.I. Gurdjieff, the restless wanderer who journeyed through the Caucasus, Asia and Africa collecting melodies along the way. Spiritual songs, chants and ancient folk music all ended up in his notebooks, and around 1920 he worked with composer Thomas de Hartmann to transcribe hundreds of these tunes into piano scores. Ibo Bakker and Rani Kumar took those scores and rearranged them specifically for this quartet. The four members are Ibo Bakker on guitar, mandoline and narration, Merel Jonker on violin, Rani Kumar on viola handling the arrangements, and Maaike Peters on cello. Together they trace a route through Paris, Armenia, Syria and across the desert, letting the music carry the geography of Gurdjieff's wandering life. It sits somewhere between chamber music, world folk and storytelling.
