About
Hiss Golden Messenger is basically the long running project of MC Taylor, who started it in Durham, North Carolina after his earlier alt country band The Court and Spark wound down. The first album came out in 2009 in a run of just 500 copies on his own label, and it grew from there into a steady stream of records, live albums and side projects. Since signing to Merge in 2014 he has put out a run of full lengths there, and Terms of Surrender picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. The sound refuses to stay in one lane. Folk and country sit alongside gospel, R&B, funk, jazz and even a bit of dub, with the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Beatles in the DNA. Critics have lined him up next to Will Oldham and Bill Callahan. He also covered Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's Brown Eyed Women for a Grateful Dead tribute, and has recently released I'm People on Chrysalis.
