About
Also known as: Andy, Horace "Andy" Hinds, Horace Hinds, Horace Keith Hinds
Horace Andy has one of the most distinctive voices in reggae, a high, piercing falsetto that has kept him relevant across decades and genres. Born Horace Keith Hinds in Kingston, Jamaica, he built his reputation at Studio One in the early 1970s with tracks like "Skylarking", which topped the Jamaican chart, and "Children of Israel", a second number one in 1973. His mid 1970s work with producer Bunny Lee produced a run of singles now regarded as classics, and his 1982 album Dance Hall Style is credited as a landmark in the early development of dancehall reggae. From 1990 onward, his collaboration with Bristol trip hop group Massive Attack introduced him to a whole new audience. He contributed to all five of their albums, most memorably on Mezzanine, where his ghostly vocal on "Angel" became one of the most recognisable moments in 1990s British music. He has kept recording steadily, and 2022 brought Midnight Rocker, produced by Adrian Sherwood of On U Sound, which drew wide critical praise. In 2024 he released a collaborative album with Jah Wobble titled Timeless Roots.
