Horse Lords

About

Horse Lords are a Baltimore quartet who play krautrock, post punk, minimalism and polyrhythm through a lens all their own. Guitarist Owen Gardner works with hand modified guitars that have repositioned frets, tuned to the just intonation system favored by avant garde composers like La Monte Young and James Tenney. The result is hypnotic, knotty, and weirdly physical. Andrew Bernstein, Max Eilbacher, Owen Gardner and Sam Haberman started with a self titled debut in 2012 and toured with the likes of Matmos and Guerilla Toss. Interventions in 2016 was the leap forward, with Pitchfork praising its focus and clarity and the New York Times calling it invigorating, noting borrowings from Mauritanian guitar music, free jazz and classical minimalism. Later records include The Common Task, Comradely Objects, a collaboration with Arnold Dreyblatt called Extended Field, and Demand to Be Taken to Heaven Alive!
