OOIOO started as a joke. Yoshimi P We, the drummer for Boredoms, was roped into a magazine photo shoot and invited some friends along to pose as a fake band. They liked it enough to make it real, and by 1997 they were opening for Sonic Youth on their Japan tour. That's a fast track from concept to credibility. The Osaka group sits somewhere in the overlap between experimental rock, noise, psychedelia, and gamelan influenced percussion, and AllMusic has essentially thrown up its hands trying to pin the sound down. Chanting, punchy drums, dancey polyrhythms, atonal passages and full on tribal weirdness can all show up in the same record. They've released a string of albums across nearly three decades, from their self titled debut to Gamel in 2013 and Nijimusi in 2019, with guest appearances over the years from the likes of Sean Lennon and Yamantaka Eye.
