About

Also known as: Iain Metthews, Ian Matthews, Ian McDonald Matthews

Few British folk rock veterans can claim a UK number one, but Iain Matthews pulled it off in 1970 when Matthews Southern Comfort took Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" straight to the top of the singles chart. Matthews had already helped shape Fairport Convention's sound across their first two albums before leaving in 1969 when the band pivoted toward traditional British folk, a direction that wasn't for him. That restless energy kept driving him forward through a string of projects: the country and rockabilly flavoured debut album, the atmospheric Plainsong record In Search of Amelia Earhart, and a Los Angeles period that produced Valley Hi, a 1973 album co produced with Michael Nesmith of the Monkees fame. His arrangement of "Seven Bridges Road" on that record later inspired the Eagles' famous live version. In a career running well past fifty years and more than 100 albums, Matthews released The New Mine with MSC in March 2020 and followed it with a vinyl only collaboration with Norwegian outfit the Salmon Smokers later that same year.
